How much does a ghostwriter cost in the UK?

A researched blog post costs £120 to £350. A wedding speech costs £150 to £400. A full-length memoir costs £18,000 to £55,000+. Every price is in pounds, up front.

Business writing

Guide prices based on typical UK rates, checked October 2026. Your quote is fixed before any work begins, and larger projects are paid in stages.

What drives the cost.

Six things decide where your project falls in the range.

Length

The biggest factor. A 90,000-word memoir costs far more than a 40,000-word family edition or a 1,000-word speech.

Research

Archives, interviews with other people, fact-checking and specialist subjects all add time.

Writer experience

Writers with published bestsellers or specialist expertise charge more than newer writers.

Deadline

A rushed timeline can mean a writer clears their diary for you, which costs more.

Language

Bilingual books need two native writers working from one set of interviews.

Your material

Existing drafts, notes or recordings can reduce cost. Starting from scratch takes longer.

Flat fee or royalties?

Most UK ghostwriters, including us, work for a flat fee. You pay for the writing, and you keep everything the book earns: royalties, advances, speaking fees and the business it brings in.

Some writers accept a lower fee plus a share of royalties. That can make sense for a book with a publishing deal already in place, but it means paying your writer for as long as the book sells, and it complicates your rights. For most clients, a flat fee is simpler and cheaper in the long run.

How payments are staged

You never pay for a whole book up front. A typical book project is paid in four stages:

  • Deposit when you sign, to secure your writer’s time
  • Outline approved, after interviews and the chapter plan
  • Halfway, when you have approved half of the chapters
  • Final manuscript, on which full copyright passes to you

Speeches and shorter projects are usually paid in one or two stages.

Why prices vary so much

Two quotes for “a memoir” can differ by tens of thousands of pounds because they describe different books. One might be a 40,000-word family edition written from ten hours of interviews. Another might be a 90,000-word book for publication with archive research and interviews with a dozen people. Ask every writer exactly what is included before you compare.

Be wary of very low quotes for full books. In 2026, a price far below the market range often means AI-generated drafts or a writer rewriting someone else’s work. We put our human-only promise in writing.

Questions, answered.

How much does a ghostwriter cost in the UK?

For full-length books, UK prices typically range from £18,000 to £55,000 or more, or about £0.30 to £1.20 per word. Speeches and shorter projects cost much less: bespoke wedding speeches usually cost £150 to £400.

Why do ghostwriters cost so much?

A full book takes three to six months of skilled, focused work: interviews, research, structure, writing and revisions. You are effectively hiring a professional author for months.

Are there cheaper options?

Yes. A shorter family memoir, a book proposal with sample chapters, or editing your own draft all cost less than a full commercial manuscript.

Do I have to pay everything up front?

No. We split fees into stages, each tied to work you have read and approved.

Do you take royalties?

No. We work for a flat fee and you keep 100% of royalties and advances.

How much does a blog post cost in the UK?

A researched blog post of 500 to 800 words typically costs £120 to £350. Long-form posts of 1,000 words or more usually cost £150 to £500, depending on research and subject.
